Well, I guess it boils down to how much you have to convert and how good you want the conversion. A cheap USB device depends a great deal on the computer itself for conversion software. This can take a great deal of time for even a small project. It is also likely to give you a more degraded picture and possibly an audio out of sync condition compared to hardware based capture units.
